Goldfins High School “Academy” Interest Meeting

February 1st at 2:00-3:00 pm at Fire Hall 5 on Preston Avenue.

For the past couple of months I have been working, with the help of Ron Biberdorf, on a high school swim group. The original idea was to partner with Bethlehem Collegiate to form an academy, after consultation with GSCS Superintendent Tom Hickey, it has been decided the best plan of action is not to partner but to work together on supporting any swimmers that join the afternoon group both academically. This means kids can attend any school in the city, the main reason for partnering with Bethlehem is the reduction in driving time.

Below are the highlights/pros that I will cover in more detail at the meeting:

  • Swim Monday – Friday 1-3 pm in the water (30 min dry land pre or post depending on drive time)
  • Attending Bethlehem - Have everything in house (drop off in the morning and pick up after work…only two trips
  • More time to spend studying and an easier schedule for meal planning
  • Opportunity for multi-sport
  • Potential to rent a room for study hall
  • Better sleep schedule/train in the daylight
  • Creates more lane space
  • Potential billeting opportunities for swimmers outside of Saskatoon

Ron Biberdorf will be on hand to talk more on the academic side of this, as a retired principal and a key player in creating other sport academies, Ron has the knowledge and experience to present on academics.

·      Special Project (see attached), swimmers create a project on swimming for class credit

·      To graduate high school a student needs 21 credits – Ron will speak to what universities are looking for

·      Online classes – Christian Ethics or ELA for example (Catholic Schools have their own system)

·      Public Schools use D2L

·      Talk with your school administrator to set up your classes in the morning
